Kumu Hula Iwalani Kalima (イヴァラニ・カリマ)
イヴァラニ・カリマは、フラ・ハラウ・オ・コウ・リマ・ナニ・エのクム・フラです。ヒロで生まれ、ケアウカハの美しい屋敷のある地域で育ちました。36年以上、有名な「フラ・ロエア」（マスター）のジョージ・ラナキラケイキアヒアリイ・ナオペの下で学んでいます。1982年、クム・パラパラを授かりました。ハワイ文化を広めたいという強い思いを持ち続けており、自らの人生経験をフラやハワイ文化・芸術を学びたいと願う人々と分かち合っています。
フラの家系をたどると、有名なメレ「ヒロ・フラ」の作曲者であった「ジョーゼフ・ノヘア・カリマ・シニア」が、祖父にあたります。父と叔父達は、1950年代と1960年代に「ヒロ・カリマ」の名で知られたエンターテイナーでした。クム・イヴァラニは、8歳でダンスを始め、家族と叔父のジョージの教えの下で、自分の文化に対する深い愛情を育み、現在は、フラとハワイ文化の保存に力を注いでいます。
クム・イヴァラニのフラスクール「フラ・ハラウ・オ・コウ・リマ・ナニ・エ」は、1986年、カイルア・コナに設立されました。その後、ケアウカハに戻り、今も文化・芸術を指導しています。クム・イヴァラニは、ハワイ人社会のためになる文化教育プログラムを開催しています。ハラウに通う生徒は、3歳から63歳で、フラの伝統やハワイの価値観・習慣をあらゆる角度から学んでいます。また、世代から世代へ受け継がれるハワイの文化芸術を十分に理解し大切にするように、ハワイの文化・生活様式を多面的に指導に取り入れ、特に音楽とフラの視点から生のハワイ文化を教えています。現在は、日本（八丈島）での指導も行っており、日本にハラウを開設しました。日本での指導は、いくつかのハラウ（ハラウ・オ・イシバシ、ハラウ・オ・ウイラニ、ハラウ・オ・プア・メリエ、ハラウ・オ・エフカイ、マウロア・フラ・スタジオ）とその「先生」と共に、1995年から行っています。ここ10年は、ハワイと日本で開催されるいくつかのフラ競技会で審査員も務めています。
2004年、フラ・ハラウ・オ・コウ・リマ・ナニ・エは、非営利組織となりました。これまでの輝かしい業績には、ヒロで毎年開催される「ヘ・ハリア・アロハ・リリウオカラニ・フェスティバル」の振り付けと調整を担当、コナでヘ・レイ・ヒヴァ・ノ・イオラニ・ルアヒネ・スカラーシップ・アワード・フェスティバルを始めたこと、などがあります。2007年、クム・イヴァラニは、ヒロで、ザ・ジョージ・ナオペ・カネ・フラ・フェスティバルを開催しました。さらには、クム・イヴァラニのハラウとカウ・プリザベーションが協働し、プナルルの人々が土地を守ることを支援する基金を募るイベント、マラマ・プナルルを開催しました。この活動を通じて、クム・イヴァラニと志を共にする人々は、フラの芸術とネイティブハワイアンの生活様式を広めています。また、クム・イヴァラニは、15年間、公立学校でハワイ文化研究の教師を務めています。
Iwalani Kalima is the Kumu Hula of Hula Halau O Kou Lima Nani E. She was born in Hilo and raised in the beautiful homestead area of Keaukaha. For over 36 years, she studied under renowned “Hula Loea” （master） George Lanakilakeikiahiali i Na ope. She received her kumu palapala in 1982. Iwalani continues her ambition to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture by sharing her life experiences with people that want to learn about hula, Hawaiian culture and its arts.
Iwalani’s hula lineage stem back from her grandfather “Joseph Nohea Kalima Sr.” the composer of the famous mele “Hilo Hula”. Her dad and uncleʻs, were entertainers known as the “Hilo Kalima” back in the 50ʻs & 60ʻs. Iwalani began dancing at the age of eight. Through the tutelage of Uncle George and her family’s upbringing, she developed a deep love for her culture and now devotes her time to the preservation of hula and the Hawaiian Culture.
Her hula school “Hula Halau O Kou Lima Nani E” was founded in 1986 in Kailua-Kona and then coming back to Keaukaha and still teaching the art of her culture. She coordinates cultural education programs that benefit the community of Hawai`i. Students in the halau range from age 3 to 63 and are taught all aspects of the hula traditions and practices of the Hawaiian values. Also sharing the Hawaiian culture alive by fostering and encouraging a deep appreciation of Hawaiian cultural arts from generation to generation, encompassing many aspects of this cultural lifestyle but with a particular focus on music and hula. She is now involved with educational programs in Japan （Hachijojima） and began her own Halau in Japan. She has been teaching in Japan since 1995 and has work with several halau and senseiʻs （ Halau o Ishibashi, Hālau o Uʻilani, Halau o Pua Melie, Hālau o Ehukai, Mauloa Hula Studio）. With in the past 10 years has become also a judge for several Hula Competitions in Hawaiʻi and Japan.
In 2004, Hula Halau O Kou Lima Nani E incorporated as a non-profit organization. Significant accomplishments to date include coordination and choreography of the annual “He Halia Aloha Lili`uokalani Festival” in Hilo, and started He Lei Hiwa No ‘Iolani Luahine Scholarship Awards Festival”, held in Kona. In 2007, Iwalani, further coordinated a festival called The George Na’ope Kane Hula Festival in Hilo. Additionally, her halau Had collaborated with Ka’u Preservation to create the event Malama Punalu’u, which raises funds to help the people of Punalu’u save their lands. Through this Iwalani and others like her will be able to perpetuate and share the art of Hula and the Native Hawaiian’s lifestyles. She also worked as a Hawaiian Studies teacher for the public schools for 15 years.
